Counselling is an opportunity for you to explore your life, and to develop a deeper understanding of your experiences. By increasing your self-awareness, you will be more able to reflect on your life and make the choices that are right for you.

By talking about your experiences in a warm and non-judgemental environment, you can come to accept all the different sides of yourself more fully, and feel happier and more confident about who you are.

You will probably want to begin by talking about issues that have been troubling you. As you do so, you’ll probably find other thoughts and feelings emerging, which you may then want to explore.

Sometimes there is uncertainty about  the difference between counselling and psychotherapy. Psychotherapy usually involves  lengthier and more in-depth therapeutic work, but there’s so much overlap between both, that the common term is now ‘therapy’.

It can help to meet with a few therapists, to see who you feel most comfortable with and able to talk to. It may be that you find out about seeing a counsellor or psychologist through your GP. Many GPs have a practice counsellor who you’ll be able to see for free, but there is often a waiting list and delay before you are seen, and they may only see you for a limited number of sessions. Your GP may also refer you on to see a clinical psychologist, who is someone specially trained to work with specific problems, such as panic attacks and phobias. Again, you may have to wait quite a long time before you see such a person, but they are effective at helping people with specific, anxiety-related disorders.

It may be that you wish to contact me with view to a course of short term counselling. This can help you identify problematic emotions, and discover how behaviour develops from how information is processed. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) can be particularly effective in making positive life changes and helping you achieve your goals.
